ZONES EXPLAINED

Zone 0 – Highest Risk (Gas/Vapor)

  • Definition: An area where an explosive gas, vapor, or mist is present continuously or for long periods.
  • Likelihood of Hazard: Constant or prolonged presence.
  • Typical Industries: Oil refineries, underground fuel tanks, chemical manufacturing.
  • Example Locations:
    • Inside fuel storage tanks
    • Interiors of process vessels handling flammable gases
    • Sealed chemical reactors

Zone 1– High Risk (Gas/Vapor)

Area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation.


Typical examples include:

  • Areas around pumps and valves
  • Filling and transfer points
  • Process equipment in refineries or chemical plants

Zone 2– Moderate Risk (Gas/Vapor)

Area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it does occur, will exist only for a short period.


Typical examples include:

  • Areas surrounding Zone 1 equipment
  • Well ventilated plant areas near gas systems

Zone 20– High Risk (Dust)

Area in which a combustible dust cloud is present continuously, for long periods, or frequently.

Typical examples include:

  • Inside silos
  • Inside dust collectors
  • Inside powder conveyors or processing vessels

Zone 21– High Risk (Dust)

Area in which a combustible dust cloud is likely to occur during normal operation.

Typical examples include:

  • Bagging and filling stations
  • Powder transfer points
  • Milling machinery

Zone 22– Moderate Risk (Dust)

Area in which a combustible dust cloud is not likely to occur during normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short duration.

Typical examples include:

  • Areas surrounding dust handling equipment
  • Storage and packaging areas
